The name of the painting is "Meet 19 Year Old Lt Edward T. McCarron" Lt McCarron was in the Fifth Fighter Squadron ("Spitten Kittens"), 52nd Fighter Group stationed at Madna airfield Italy from July 1944 to February 1945. His first combat mission, depicted in the painting, was 12 August 1944, which happened to be D-Day in South France. Lt McCarron was only 19 years old. This mission was portrayed in Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks "Masters of the Air" Series in Episode 8. The mission was to straf German RADAR sites in southern France near Toulon and Cannes. Lt McCarron flew his required 300 combat hours without incident, which was incredible. The Fifth Fighter Squadron during McCarron tenure lost 17 pilots and 20+ aircraft. Lt McCarron was then transferred to Lafayette Louisiana to train for the Japan invasion, which never happened. He remained in Lafayette after the WWII. He met a local cajun girl and that's the rest of the story.. I was able to piece together Lt McCarron's USAAC service by using his log book and researching USAF records. Lt McCarron started his flying career right out of high school at 17 years old. The Army Air Corps had a special aviation program for students with high scores in math and sciences.... WOW;; what an amazing story..... Lt McCarron passed away 12 May 2011. He will always be part of the greatest generation in history.....I salute Lt McCarron......
